Malicious Thoughts About the Spyware Ills of My Pc

Introduction

Who would think I was capable of such revengeful thoughts about the parties responsible for inflicting my poor computer with spyware Well, after the trauma of having gone through such an experience for the first time, I was sorely tempted by the occult section of curses and witchcraft at my local bookstore. Growl!

Basically, I am a normal person using a home computer to perform simple normal tasks such as word processing, writing emails, internet banking, and surfing the Internet for useful information. Ok, I also have a weakness for looking for bargains on good old eBay (sheepish grin) and Paypal is quite a handy option for easy purchasing. Problem:

Great dismay and panic hit when my pc started popping up strange windows or messages. With my limited IT knowledge, I ran a Norton virus scan which obviously revealed a number of problems. But the Symantec removal tool did not remove the spyware and I could not even log onto a couple of password protected sites. My beloved pc was infected with some malware or adware or trojan, among which, I believe was WinFixer and a Trojan Vundo. I did not know how to get rid of Vundo or how to remove WinFixer. (Or perhaps they were the one and same thing?). But at that point, I did not know any better, so began the laborious task of searching for information on how to get rid of the spyware.Research:

From my search, I found out that the Trojan Vundo is a trojan horse that causes popups advertising rogue anti spyware rograms. For example, the program called Sysprotect is advertised in many of the popup windows as seen from the screenshot below. Vundo infects a computer by creating a DLL file in the Windows system directory and writes registry entries causing Windows to inject the file into winlogon.exe.

WinFixer, on the other hand, has siblings as it is identical to WinAntiVirus and ErrorSafe. And these programs all claim to repair problems within your computer system. By installing the program on your computer, you will likely end up receiving false information about your computer. Naturally, this will confuse you into believing your PC is infected with viruses, spyware nd/or other forms of malware.

The popups and forced downloads apparently mirror “marketing” strategies of many spyware programs. And at times, infected computers will reduce in their level of speed and performance. Well, this all explained what was probably happening to my pc, and I knew I had to figure out how to get rid of WinFixer and Vundo before they drove me mad. Research and solution:

In my initial panic, I reacted by downloading some recommended antispyware programs, namely CounterSpy by Sunbelt Software, XoftSpy by ParetoLogic and Spy Sweeper by Webroot Software Inc. I came to my senses by the third program and stopped myself from paying for another popular program, Spyware Doctor. But hey, all these programs did receive pretty good reviews from the experts at PCWorld, PCMag, CNet, Tucows and AdwareReport. So at the time, I did not feel that I had gone too much overboard ;)

Now, there are many sites listing all sorts of free and paid anti spyware rograms with a variety of reviews and user opinions on how to remove WinFixer and how to get rid of Vundo. Many of the commercial antispyware program homepages also list very detailed features of their products plus the latest research findings about current spyware threats. Have a look at this webpage that lists some of these reliable programs. www.consumerstyle.com/antispyware

Anyway, an opinion and recommendation I had read when researching for the reliable antispyware programs made heaps sense in that software you pay for is more likely to offer benefits over freeware, i.e., better support, more frequent updates and better pro-active protection measures. One just has to be careful when selecting the programs. According to the comments in the forums and review articles I read, many recommend using at least two programs to be able to catch the latest spyware hat either program might miss (that was when I stopped myself from my downloading frenzy). I have learnt much more about my pc now and wish to share and perhaps amuse you my muddled but finally effective measures to cleaning up my pc and removing the spyware. My actions:

My initial Norton antivirus scan found but was not able to delete Vundo, even after rebooting. The Symantec removal tool did not help at all. I had disconnected from the Internet, disabled system restore, and ran the removal tool, regularly and in safe mode. After numerous startups, varying with safe mode, and disabling antivirus, I even tried to figure out how to remove Vundo manually without messing with the registry etc. Please note that some people had success with the Symantec removal tools, and some others, like me, did not. Apart from the Trojan Vundo, I was getting quite frustrated at not being able to remove WinFixer for the many windows continually popping up started to slow my computer down, and even freeze it at times.

So I first tried Xoftspy, which was the fastest when scanning my computer. I was pleased to have fewer pop ups, was able to remove WinFixer, and ended with a much faster internet connection.

Then with my next program, Spy Sweeper, I ran it twice and then did a full system scan. Lo and behold, Vundo was gone, no more popups and adware annoyances. I guess this might not work for everyone but it is worth a shot to download Spy Sweeper.

Being still paranoid about the health of my pc, I finally ran the the free two-week trial version of CounterSpy, for extra assurance. Now I was quite impressed as it also included a scheduler, secure file shredder, and a history cleaner that made it simple to set up weekly scans. And there are frequent definition file updates for CounterSpy’s publisher. The company seems to run a well-staffed spyware research department. After a scan, CounterSpy can delete, quarantine, or remove spyware I was advised not to install Microsoft AntiSpyware alongside older versions of CounterSpy (version 1.5 and below). And it is recommended to get CounterSpy to check for online updates of definitions and program files manually. Conclusion:

To sum it all, XoftSpy was able to delete WinFixer as the program was able to uninstall WinFixer within fifteen minutes requiring a couple of restarts. As for Spy Sweeper, it managed to remove Vundo with ease. And I have no doubt that CounterSpy has done a great job of keeping my pc free of spyware. I cannot say that I have taken the best approach to solving my problems, but my pc is now running faster than ever and I have been free of WinFixer and Vundo ever since. I just have to remember to be more careful and scan my pc regularly.

One thing is for sure, there are many reliable and popular antispyware programs out there, and many helpful forum chat folk who can lend a hand with plenty of technical advice. You just have to sort out what advice and which steps to take by increasing your own awareness and understanding of your pc and the nasty world of spyware lurking around these days.

9 Tips to Keep Your Computer Free From Spyware and Malware

In these economically strained times, computer crime such identity theft from spyware uns rampant. Adding insult to injury, many malware can permanently disable your computer. Here are some tips for how to keep your computer up and running and free of spyware adware and other malware.

• Run a spyware emoval tool. Remember that many software that claims to remove spyware is actually spyware in disguise, so be wary and download antispyware only from reputable sources.

• Avoid Microsoft Outlook. This seemingly innocent program has so many unsavory security holes in it because of the great lengths it goes through to open and interpret your data, that it’s almost impossible to run without leaving your security door open for your PC to be infected by the next virus that comes out. Use an email managing system that has a good reputation and fewer adware problems. Check the internet to research the one that is best for you.

• Avoid Microsoft Internet Explorer for the same reason as Outlook.

• Keep all antivirus software up to date using the procedures that were included with it at purchase. Updates often are published daily, so update when one is offered.

• Stay current with your PC system updates. This is a high priority. If that fails, contact your manufacturer via Internet Explorer.

• Do not open an email attachment unless it’s from someone you trust, and from whom you’re expecting an attachment. Attachments should be sent separately from the email saying the attachment is coming. In other words, email your source that you will be sending an attachment in the next email, then email the attachment separately with a note. Ask senders to do the same for you.

• Use a firewall on all equipment that has this protection. If your Windows or browser box has the option of running personal firewall software, do it. You need multiple security layers, and this one is free and easy.

• Pick antiviral software with a good reputation. A computer expert can fill you in on the kind best suited for your PC. Please note that this software does not prevent the computer from getting viruses, it merely cleans up some of them once the computer is infected.

• Never set up a network share from your system. This also applies to a shared printer or a shared drive. Contact an internet security person if you need a jolt of fear regarding this matter. That person will tell you that this is like leaving the door open after moving into a mansion full of priceless artwork after a community home showing.

If you factor your time and effort into the proper care and prevention of computer problems, and use award-winning antispyware to remove spyware adware and malware, you will remain a worry-free driver on the internet super highway.

Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Spyware

John Locke said that “no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty, or possessions”, Yet as I sit here at my computer this morning, I get the feeling that the attempts being made to keep the Internet’s safe will not come to fruition soon.

Yes, I can hear you saying, “don’t be such a downer, Doug”

Well, hear me out.

Lets explore John Lockes quote shall we?

Life. Yours, mine, your loved ones. Its yours, to do with what you will. Well, sometimes your will is to use the Internet’s. But how secure are you? Is your AntiVirus, Anti spyware nd Firewall working and up to date? Do you know what is a Spam email is and not to click on the URL they provide? These decisions can affect your life if you are online.

Next, Liberty or as I prefer to think of, Freedom. To have access to particular resources without constraint. If online threats are making your life hectic, would you consider your rights violated? I would if I found out that some drive by download had installed a keylogger on my computer and then cleaned out my bank account. Or how about while you’re trying to conduct business online and you keep getting these awful pop=ups telling you about the sale at Harveys Fish Emporium.

Are your Liberties/ Freedoms being constrained yet?

Now we come to the best part, the pursuit of spyware Ok, so John Locke didn’t say anything about spyware spyware Write your own article, this ones mine!

Threats to our online safety are growing in leaps and bounds by the day. I learned long ago, there is always someone out there who is better than anyone previously. The attacks on servers, the Bot networks, the phishing, the URL re-directs, Keyloggers, Image Spam, it just goes on and on. Your personal information is at risk every minute you are online.

I know, you have the best AntiVirus, Anti spyware and Firewall there is. But is it really? How do you know? When was the last time you ran “Hijack This” and uploaded the results to a help Forum like MajorGeeks, Bleeping Computer or DaniWeb? Its the only way to make sure your computer is clean. And theres no guarantee it wont become re-infected two minutes after you leave the Forum.I know it happens because I frequent these Forums and I see hundreds of freaked users pleading for help. Many are repeat submitters.

Which brings me to the whole purpose of this article. To bring into the spotlight those out there who fight everyday to help keep us safe. They sit at their computers for hours at a time, examining postings in Forums to help others they don’t even know stay out of the clutches of those who would benefit from the misfortune of others.

Ever get that feeling of helplessness that comes when your computer wont work right.

Remember? Not fun huh? These people read your postings and know your pain. Its hard to do this also, they have to help you fix your computer thru posting instructions for you to do. Miscommunication and frustrations can cause it to take longer and compound the repairs.

Then there are the organizations that go after the meanies that cause your pain.

They put out alerts and issue fixes. These include The Alliance of Security Analysis Professionals, The Anti- spyware oalition, The Council of Advocates for Relief from Malware Assimilation, The Spamhaus Project, just to name a few. There are plenty more out there that are fighting the good fight every day. The goal is a communication arena where all can participate without concern of malicious intent.

Kind of like the old days when the Internet first existed.

Back then there were “Hackers”. They were mostly driven by ego and competition to see who was the best. Now its mostly about money. Legions of Bot captured computers sending out Spam and ads going to millions and millions of unprotected servers, computers and of course, into your email. Theres also the Pharming of websites, waiting like a spider in its lair for you to show up and give you a lil driveby download of something special. You name the evil that people do and you can find it online. Thank goodness the goodness of the Internet’s is on the other side of the scale.

So, the solution? Make another one and try again? I don’t have the answer, I do know that there are good people out there who want safety for all and are making a good show of it. They deserve our thanks.

I believe there is alway bad that comes with the good. A balance or whatever. And like the other saying goes, Retaining Freedom for all requires constant vigilance.

So be vigilant.

Antivirus or Internet Security ?

Since Hackers became best friends with antivirus multinationals, they have been working hard on finding new solutions to increase the market.

Many new webinars have this fear of virus and the first application they ‘re downloading on internet is an Antivirus, as soon it’s on they feel so secure that they don’t pay any attention on what they ‘re surfing from then.

I should admit that from the 15 years I’m on the web, I’ve never bough any Antivirus r internet security, and it has only cost me 2 computers, total cost 3000 $ to save 1000 $ antivirus over 15 years.

Well I don’t think I will still risk another computer and certainly not all my data!

While surfing to find the best protection, you may notice that providers are offering different types of protections.   Antivirus firewall, antispyware, internet security, total protection … Norton goes now to 360 edition and talking about all in one protection.

Beware, as much it’s protecting, your pc can still be affect by the way you are surfing and understanding where you’re going. It doesn’t protect against stupidity!

I’ve seen many ads on TV talking about https, what does it mean? Only that your paiement is secure and keep your privacy, it doesn’t assure that you’re paying for the product you ‘ve been requesting, some webmaster are selling links to free trials ! That ’s call Scam sites, and nothing is protecting you against it, so keep paying attention on the site you’ re on, the trademarks have to appears at the bottom fo the page, and for more security, go directly to the dot com domain of the provider.

Big search engine as Google are working with robots and they can’t detect those kinds of scam sites until someone human is telling them!

If you’re looking for an Intelligent search engine to download software, go to Jeefy.com, every links are reviewed manually and all certified from officials resellers.

Back to my first purpose … so Antivirus or Internet Security?

The most popular download actually is the free antivirus edition from AVG/Grisoft, and that’s why I said ” Better be not protected than half protected” at least you’re taking care of what you’re are doing, and you don’t “think” you’re protected…

Free Editions and trials are offered from about every Antivirus Provider, don’t get full by this, it’s just to show you how it’s working and it’s just protecting a parcel of the risk. An Antivirus ast Maximum 40 $; an Internet Security is about 60 * maximum and just 20 $ difference worth it, and I personally would pay 80 $ for a Norton 360 all in one security.

What’s that next level of security?

Antivirus Anti spyware Firewall, Registry Cleaner, Privacy controller, checking email and website you’re surfing on … we’re far ahead from the single Antivirus igure.   Talking about prices and quality?

It’s like cars! You may like one that I hate and Vice versa. But think as well of the price of your computer, privacy and data …. to stupid to lose it for not paying 80 $ a year !   If you’re going for a free edition or free trial, don’t forget to upgrade

And a last reminder, as much those programs are promising security, they don’t protect against stupidity … or Mars Attack!

XP Police Antivirus – Don’t Fall For It

Have you heard of XP Police Antivirus It is a new rogue anti- spyware rogram designed to trick you in to spending your money. Even though you may have no spyware installed on your pc, this program will try to convince you otherwise. Through displayed ads, it will try to make you believe that your security is at risk and that you need to download the software. Avoid this, it is a total fake.

You see, XP Police Antivirus wants you to download their free software to clear up infections on your computer, even though there are probably none there to begin with. Once downloaded, they will alert you that the infections are so severe that you must purchase the licensed product in order for them to restore your security. This is all a hoax, so don’t buy in to it. If you do, you are absolutely throwing your money away.

If you don’t understand spyware to begin with, here is a little explanation. This is software that gets placed on your pc, usually through other files you download such as weather, messenger alerts, freeware and online computer games. You probably don’t even realize that you have downloaded it, because it “piggy backs” on these other programs. When you get it, you will know it shortly.

When your computer becomes infected with spyware you will notice many symptoms. Some of these include a slow computer, pop-up ads and changes in your browser. Since spyware spyware ctually follows and tracks your online searches, the ads you get will probably be related to your interests. This is how these malicious programs can display advertisements that are related to topics you have searched for, websites you have visited, etc.

Anti- spyware spyware roducts are made to eliminate problems like this; however there are many fake ones like XP Police Antivirus. Many of these rogue programs will actually install additional malware on your pc, so you want to be very cautious about downloading anything. Your personal security can also be at risk, because some software has the ability to access your passwords and online business information. Rarely, people have been the victims of identity theft because of this.

Where does XP Police Antivirus ome from? It could come from various sources, but many times it comes from websites you visit that offer copyrighted material, or adult websites. You may never know where it came from if you get it. Getting a reliable and legitimate anti-spyware program is recommended in order to restore security to your pc. Many legitimate products don’t perform well, and will leave you having to purchase another product to finish the job.

Do you believe that XP Police Antivirus is installed on your computer? The best thing you can do is use a recommended and reputable anti-spyware product.

To scan your pc for free and find out if you have XP Police Antivirus lick here.

Ang antivirus 09 is Nothing but Bad News

Your computer is a big part of your life. You spent a lot of money to get it in the first place, so you should take care of it as best as you can. You can do this by getting software to get rid of malicious software and keep it away for good. The problem with finding software that will do this is that there are programs like Ang Antivirus 9 that are just looking to scam you out of your money.

Ang antivirus 09 is a rogue antivirus program that has been made by cyber criminals. It sole purposes are to harm your computer and get you to pay for it to do so. Though Ang antivirus 09 may tell you that it is good for your computer, it is completely powerless to help your computer in any way.

Ang antivirus 09 uses two methods to infect your computer. You may come across a website that gives warning messages tel ling you about infections on your computer. A fake online scan will then start and it will suggest that you use Ang Antivirus 9 in order to remove all of the threats it found on your system. The other means of infection is even more dubious.

When you visit a rogue website, it will look for any holes in your browser’s security and exploit them. The website will load a Trojan horse onto your computer and that Trojan will download Ang antivirus 09 later, secretly and without your permission. It will be installed and then Ang antivirus 09 will begin its scamming techniques.

Warning messages will start to appear that tell you your computer is infected with malicious software. They will suggest that you let Ang antivirus 09 scan your computer for the threats. If you agree, then Ang antivirus 09 will initiate a convincing looking scan that will ultimately yield fake results. These results may include some of your personal files or legitimate files from your system, but they will be accused of being malicious.

At this point, Ang Antivirus 9 will pressure you into paying for the full version of its program. However, this full version doesn’t protect your computer at all. It doesn’t remove any real threats, nor does it prevent threats from infecting your computer. Instead, it will slow down your computer, give you pop-ups, change your browser settings, and slow down your Internet connection.

If Ang antivirus 09 has infected your computer, it should be removed immediately. Leaving it on your computer will seriously hinder your computer’s performance. To remove it, you should use a legitimate antispyware program. Manual removal is possible, but it is difficult, time consuming, and high inefficient.

If you need a real anti spyware spyware rogram, be sure to research the company that makes it before you buy it. You should also make sure that it guarantees 100% spyware emoval. If there is no information on the company behind it or if it doesn’t have that 100% guarantee it isn’t worth getting because it won’t properly protect your computer.

To scan your pc for free and find out if you have Ang Antivirus 9 click here.
